(Deci and Ryan, 2008;Ryan and Deci, 2000)。

(Guingrich and Graziano, 2025;Heng and Zhang, 2025;Yu and Lan, 2025)。

(Baumeister and Leary, 1995;Cacioppo and Hawkley, 2009)。

(Heng and Zhang, 2025;Nakagomi et al., 2026;Peng et al., 2025;Yu and Lan, 2025)。

Educators, counselors, and mental-health practitioners should interpret self-reported AI reliance within the user’s broader social ecology. The revised PED measure is not a diagnostic tool (Seeger et al., 2021). It may help identify experiences that warrant conversation, but clinical screening or intervention requires validated instruments, functional-impairment evidence, and professional judgment (Ciriello et al., 2026; Lai et al., 2025; Shen et al., 2026).

5.4 Limitations and future research

Several limitations should be acknowledged. First, the cross-sectional design cannot establish temporal order or causal mediation. Reverse and reciprocal associations are plausible; longitudinal panel and experimental designs are needed. Second, all focal variables were self-reported in one survey. Shared method, evaluative tone, and semantic overlap may inflate associations even when HTMT is below conventional cutoffs. Third, the Chinese context and platform ecology limit generalizability. Cross-cultural replication should measure, rather than presume, cultural mechanisms.

6 Conclusion

Among adults in China reporting recent use of listed AI-companion or conversational-AI products, perceived anthropomorphism was positively associated with interaction-specific basic psychological need satisfaction and with a broad, non-clinical measure of problematic emotional dependence. A loneliness-contingent indirect association appeared in the full sample but not among dedicated/character-platform users. The robust contribution is therefore the positive cross-sectional association among the core constructs; the moderation finding is platform-contingent and requires replication. Responsible interpretation and design require attention to construct validation, platform ecology, recruitment provenance, and longitudinal evidence.
