Abstract

International Classification of Diseases includes Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder (CSBD) in the category of impulse control disorders, aiming to standardize diagnostic criteria and expand scientific understanding of this phenomenon. There are few studies assessing the occurrence of CSBD and its population characteristics outside North America and Western Europe, limiting the generalizability of findings to these populations. The study aimed to evaluate the occurrence of CSBD in a large Brazilian sample, its correlation with Paraphilic Disorder (PD), and to evaluate the sociodemographic characteristics of individuals at risk of experiencing compulsive sexual behavior symptoms. This was a cross-sectional, quantitative study conducted online with a convenience sample of individuals in Brazil. The survey included sociodemographic data and the Brazilian Portuguese version of the CSBD-19. Categorical variables were described using absolute and relative frequencies and analyzed using chi-squared or Fisher's exact tests, as appropriate. A total of 5,335 individuals participated, with 5.3% at risk of experiencing CSB. Positive associations were observed between being at risk for CSBD and being a cisgender man; paraphilic interest in Exhibitionism, Fetishism, and Zoophilic; paraphilic disorders regarding Frotteuristic, Partialism, and Specific Characteristics Disorder. Presenting Paraphilia discomfort was associated with, regardless of the paraphilia type presented. The occurrence of CSBs in Brazil is similar to that found globally. Gender and sexual orientation-based differences in CSBD were highlighted, with higher rates in men and sexually diverse individuals, which was not supported by the logistic regression analysis. Future research should further investigate CSBD across different populations, with special attention to underrepresented and underserved populations.
